Why are forests affected by wars?

Wars usually inflict a major strain on national economies. During wartime, production of military and civilian supplies has to be kept very high. To this effect, while fighting wars, governments often resort to unrestricted forest felling and mining for procuring enough raw materials. It is such raw materials that keep the production supplies flowing. For example, during the two World Wars, the Allies indiscriminately exploited the natural recources of their colonies. As a result, both the wars severely depletedthe forest covers of these colonial countries. Hence, wars are known to affect forests in such negative fashion.
