In 1979 China invaded Vietnam. Vietnam with the Soviets helped had been fighting allies of China in Cambodia. China was also concerned about Soviet attempts to hem them in Asia. Vietnam was big part of the USSR plan to keep China contained. China invaded Vietnam in February of 1979 and took small towns in North Vietnam. The Vietnamese Army counter attacked and bleed the Chinese dry. In March China withdrew their forces but the loses at the hands of Vietnamese was far bigger than originally planned. The Vietnam Air force had preformed badly against the Soviet equipped Vietnamese. China did prove that the Soviets could not protect Vietnam but the Chinese learned their military was weak and badly need to be modernized.
As to outcome no major change on the boarder just about 20,000 Chinese death and 10,000 Vietnamese deaths.
