By determining the value of respiratory quotient, the nature of respiratory substrate can be known.For example, if the value of respiratory quotient is 1, it indicates that carbohydrates are being oxidized during respiration. If the value is less than 1, it will be concluded that organic matter like fats constitutes the respiratory substrates.
