What are ‘Reserved Constituencies’?

Electoral constituencies are reserved for candidates from Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes are known as reserved constituencies.

The constitution makers made the provision for reserved constituencies for members of the scheduled castes and scheduled tribes in India because :

The economically weaker section of the society may not have the required resources, education and contacts to contest and win elections against others.

Those who are influential and resourceful may prevent them from winning elections.

The Delimitation Commission of India identifies these constituencies and revises them from time to time based on changing demographics.
