India has a long advantageous coastline. Explain.

India has a long coastline on the Indian Ocean. Western side it has Arabian sea and Eastern side it has Bay of Bengal.

This long coastline is really advantageous for following reasons:

  1. This coastline provided a significant boost to India’s maritime trade. Almost 90% of India’s international trade is done through sea.
  2. The Decean Peninsula extends towards the Indian Ocean, thus helping India to establish close contact with West Asia, Africa and Europe from the Western coast and with South-East Asia and East Asia from the Eastern coast.
  3. No other country has such a long coastline on the Indian Ocean, it justifies the naming of an ocean after it.
  4. India has developed many coasts like Mumbai, Chennai, Kochi, Visakhapatnam etc which have become major centres for international business.
