Within a poor household, the wage earners and male members are given special treatment. They have the first right of consumption over the available resources. Other members of the family have to manage on the remaining resources.

This group consists of women, elderly people and children (especially the girl child). They are systematically denied equal access to resources available to the family. In poor families, all suffer but this group suffers more. Thus, it can be concluded that in poor families all suffer, but some suffer more than others.
