The cooperative are playing an important role in food securtiy in India, particularly in the Southern and Western parts of India. The cooperatives benefit the poor people in India in the following ways:
- The cooperatives set up shops to sell low priced goods to poor people.
- Mother Dairy, Amul are famous cooperatives for milk, milkproducts and vegetables. Many cooperatives running in different parts of the country ensure food security of different sections of society.
- In Maharashtra, Academy of Development Science (ADS) has facilitated a network of NGOs for setting up grain banks in different region. Grain Bank Programme is a successful and innovative food security intervention.
