How democracy produces an accountable, responsive and legitimate government?
Following are the conditions in which democracy can produce and accountable, responsive and legitimate government:
- The citizens should have the opportunity to participate in the process of decision making whenever necessary.
- When the decision making is followed according to democratic norms and procedures. A citizen should have the means and right to examine the process of decision making and ensuring transparency in governance.
- Ultimately, for a democracy to produce an accountable, responsive and legitimate government, it must ensure the following:
i) Regular, free and fair elections.
ii) Open public debate on major policies and legislations.
iii) Citizen’s right to be informed about Government policies.
iv) A Government free from corruption.
