Calculate the number of electrons and protons

Calculate the number of electrons and protons in Na+ and Cl ions.
[Atomic number of Na = 11, atomic number of Cl = 17]

A neutral atom has same number of electron and proton which is same to the atomic number of element. When atom acquires one unit positive charge (e.g. Na+), then number of electrons is decreased by one but number of protons remains the same.

Similarly, when atom acquires one unit negative charge (e.g. Cl), then the number of electrons is increased by one but number of protons still remains the same.

Hence, number of protons in Na+ = 11 Number of electrons in Na+ =11-1 = 10
Number of protons in Cl = 17
Number of electrons in Cl = 17 +1 = 18.
