A trait may be inherited but may not be expressed. The example is recessive trait. Mendel stated that tallness in pea plant is dominant over dwarfness. When tall and dwarf pea plants are crossed. Then in F1 all plant born are tall (dwarf does not express) itself, it remains hidden). But when F1 plants are selfed, the recessive trait dwarfness reappears in F2 generation in ratio of 3 tall : 1 dwarf.
