(b) Private Quelch was just an ordinary soldier, but had the high ambition to become an officer. Private Quelch’s lanky body, horn-rimmed spectacles and his love for showing off his knowledge earned him the nickname the ‘Professor’. He also took great pride in ‘educating’ and ‘cprrecting’ people in a snobbish manner. Although he meant well, his colleagues and superiors did not appreciate his manner. He was unaffected by all the criticism that he received.
He desired to rise through the ranks in the army, for which he worked very hard by studying manuals till late at night. Unfortunately, he brought about his own downfall through his snobbish behaviour. Despite being taught a lesson by being transferred to the camp kitchen, his attitude did not change.
