Imbibition is the diffusion of water along a gradient into an adsorbent. Two conditions necessary for imbibition are:
(a) Water potential gradient between the surface of the adsorbent and the liquid imbibed.
(b) Affinity between the adsorbent and the imbibed
liquid.
