Previously, the criteria for classification of plants and animals were based on only external morphological characters which were observed with naked eyes. The characters like root modification, leaf venation and floral structures were used in classification of flowering plants. So, ancient taxonomy considered only limited features in the classification of organisms. This way of classification was considered as classical taxonomy.
