Statues and monuments in India are affected by acid rain. How?

The air around the statues and monuments in India contains fairly high levels of oxides of sulphur and nitrogen. It is mainly due to a large number of industries and power plants around areas. Oxides of nitrogen and sulphur are acidic in nature. ${{SO}_{2}}$ and

${{NO}_{2}}$ after oxidation and reaction with water are major contributors to acid rain.

This acid rain reacts with marble of statues and monuments causing damage to these.
