An example of an even function for you: y=x^2
Notice that it is symmetric about the y-axis. This means that f(-x)=f(x) for all x in the domain. You can use this to prove that a function is/isn’t even without graphing it by substituting -x for x in the function. If it simplifies to f(x), the function is even. If it simplifies to -f(x), the function is odd. If neither of these are true, the function has no vertical or horizontal symmetry.
