Nazi Germany is reffered to as “The Third Reich”? Was there something called “The First Reich” and “The Second Reich”?
The word “Reich” in Germany means “realm” or “empire” and was used by the Nazi regime to show their leadership as the third great age of German history. The first of these Reichs was the Holy Roman Empire, which was established in the 9th century and formally lasted until the early 19th century.
The second of these Reichs was the Empire established by Otto von Bismarck and Wilhelm I in the 1870s which lasted until the end of WWI.
The Third Reich was seen as a similar empire or realm to these governments and the term was used to celebrate the cultural and historical achievements of the German people.
