Why are multi-purpose projects considered as the ‘Temples of Modern India’?
Ans. Jawaharlal Nehru wanted India to be self-reliant quickly to overcome the handicap of its colonial past.
That is why he launched the Five Year Plans to integrate development of agriculture and the village economy with rapid industrialisation and growth of the urban economy. As part of the plans, harnessing the benefits of multi-purpose river projects was a key factor envisaged by Nehru to lead India to progress.
The dams were an important symbol of these projects and consequendy of the modernisation of India. That is why Nehru called dams as the ‘Temples of Modern India’.
