Is there a reason that landing craft used in dday landing opens in front?
Answer:
Although it may seem like a dangerous and disadvantages idea to leave all of the troops so easily exposed by opening at the front, these boats were designed in order to get as many troops on the ground at once. By opening at the front these troops could move more quickly and efficiently than by the sides or the back and so were able to storm the beaches.
The reason why so many casualties were sustained in the use of these boats at D-day was that artillery had failed to neutralize the German defenses and Allied tanks had failed to make it on to the beach, which made the German defense all the more aggressive.
