Indicate the general type of reaction represented in each the following reactions:
(options: elimination, substitution, acid-base, addition, oxidation-reduction)
Concepts and reason
The problem is based on the concept of mechanism of organic reaction.
Organic reactions proceeds by elimination, substitution, addition reaction mechanism. In the elimination reaction, substituents are removed from the molecule. The substitution reaction is proceed by replacement of one functional group by other functional group. In the addition reaction, multiple bonds in the molecule breaks to form the single bonds in the molecule.
In the elimination reaction, the leaving group is eliminate and the unsaturated molecule is formed. Substitution reaction is the displacement reaction. The molecule with less nucleophilic nature is substituted by the more nucleophilic molecule. In the addition reaction, the double bonds in the carbon are cleaved and two new sigma bonds are created.
Consider the reaction as follows:
In the chemical reaction, the C = C bond is broken and X and Y are added to the reactant. The reaction is proceeds by the addition reaction.
Consider the chemical reaction as follows:
In the chemical reaction, the C =C bond is formed and X atom is removed from the reactant. The reaction is proceeds by the elimination reaction.
Consider the chemical reaction as:
In the chemical reaction, X atom substitutes the Y atom. The chemical reaction is proceeds by the substitution reaction.
