Illustrate the difference between rural and urban poverty. Is it correct to say that poverty has shifted from rural to urban areas ? Use the trends in poverty ratio to support your answer

(i) Poverty which prevails in rural areas is called
rural poverty, and poverty which exists in urban areas is called urban poverty.
(ii) In India, the rural poverty was 37.3 percent
in 1993-94 which reduced to 21.8 percent in 2004-05. Urban poverty also reduced from 32.4 percent to 21.7 percent during the same period.
(iii) In this way, the declining poverty ratio was
the same in both rural and urban areas in 2004-05. It seems that rural poverty has shifted from rural to urban areas.
