How were whales hunted in the 1800s? Did whalers use spears?
In most cases, whales were hunted during this period with the use of harpoons, which were barbed spears that would stick deep into the blubber of the whale.
These harpoons would not gravely injure the whale, but instead a rope would be tied to the harpoon and the boat would then be dragged by the whale until it was exhausted.
Eventually the whale would become so exhausted that the hunters could then approach it and begin to stab it with spears and other weapons in order to kill it. Eventually the collective damage of all of these blows and the exhaustion would kill the animal, which would then be brought to shore to be butchered.
