how were the experiences of asian immigrants different from those of european immigrants
Asian immigrants had very different experiences compared to European immigrants
- Asian immigrants were alienated by the white population of America due to the extreme cultural divide between oriental and western culture. Most of the differing experiences that Asian immigrants had were due to racial tensions between the American population and the immigrants.
Racism against Asians was much more common than against Europeans, such as in San Francisco where segregated schooling for Asian children existed. Many Asians had difficulties finding employment with a (not surprisingly) overwhelimingly white employer base, which led many of them to take hard labor jobs working on railroads.
These were low paying jobs, with 0 benefits and a very high risk of bodily harm or death. Asian immigrants also encountered persecution on an institutional level as seen in the Chinese Exclusion Act which banned Chinese citizens from immigrating to the United States
