How were smallpox blankets used to infect Native Americans?
Smallpox and other European diseases were the most devastating aspect of the European colonization of the Americas. Millions of Native Americans died due to their lack of previous exposure to the disease and it often wiped out entire villages. British forces were aware of this, and often gave blankets from smallpox hospitals to Native Americans as a form of biological warfare.
The most well known case of this was at the Siege of Fort Pitt, where British forces intentionally gave attacking Native Americans infected blankets and goods in order to weaken their numbers. It was extremely effective and led to the deaths of the majority of the force.
