How was Yugoslavia involved in ww2?
Yugoslavia was invaded by the Axis powers in 1941 and was subsequently occupied until the end of the war in 1945. Partisan groups, rebels, and guerrilla fighters made it almost impossible to peacefully occupy the country, and many separate groups formed which led to a widespread and violent civil war.
Over 1 million people died in the four years of Axis occupation, which consisted of 1 in 12 people in the country at the time dying either in conflict or due to its effects. The issues and disputes that arose during this time led to a high level of animosity in the country for decades to come, which would eventually culminate in another civil war in the 1990s, which would again lead to the deaths of millions of civilians.
