How was Viking army organized? Did they have any ranks?
Viking armies were not as structurally ranked as they are in modern military groups, but there were certainly orders of authority within most Viking groups. In general, as most Viking armies traveled mainly by ship, most armies were divided into separate ship crews of around 40-60 individuals. Each of these ships would have a captain, usually a “heerth”, who had sworn loyalty to the king of the region over the hearth of his fire. These “heerth” were the core of the Viking army and usually occupied the most central authoritative roles within the military.
