How to compare roman spatha vs gladius? What are the advantages of each of these weapons?
Although quite similar in their design, the Roman spatha was longer than the gladius, which gave Roman legionaries a longer reach in battle. The spatha replaced the gladius in the Roman army and became the template from which many medieval swords were designed. A gladius would be more effective in close combat situations due to its shorter reach but the length of the spatha made it far more effective in battle and so more popular within the army.
