How to compare battles of Antietam and Gettysburg? Which was more important?
As with any conflict, it is difficult to say which battle was more decisive, although both were important for their own reasons. The Battle of Antietam was important in that it was the first battle that was not an overwhelming defeat for the Union side and led to the gradual retreat of Confederate forces out of Maryland.
It was the bloodiest battle in American history, with over 23,000 casualties in just one day. The Battle of Gettysburg is important in that it is the true turning point of the conflict and the final sign that the Union would be victorious in the war. In all, it is difficult to say which battle was more important, although both were most certainly decisive moments in the history of the American Civil War.
