How much did the Holocaust damage the jewish community?
It is extremely difficult to even estimate how many Jews survived the Holocaust, as in the chaos of Post-WWII Europe a census of Holocaust survivors was not taken. It is known that in the 1930s around 9 million Jews lived in Europe and by 1950 this number had fallen to around 3 million. This does not mean that all of these Jews were killed by the Nazi regime, however, as a large majority of them emigrated to North or South America as refugees
The US Holocaust Memorial Museum has attempted to establish a Holocaust survivor’s list, which has amassed around 200,000 names, but even this is incomplete due to survivors either dying straight after the war or not signing the list. It is an extremely difficult question to answer and a true estimate is impossible to give, but the large majority of Jews in Germany and Nazi occupied regions were killed in the Holocaust, with only a minor fraction being able to survive due either to hiding from German authorities or by being placed in forced labor camps.
