How many Sumerian books are preserved till today?
As a book is a term used to describe a collection of pages bound together with writing on them, there are no existing Sumerian books as they either did not write on paper or they have not survived to the modern day. However, there are many other forms of Sumerian literature that survive to the modern day, with the most numerous by far being the Sumerian tablets.
Rough estimates place the amount of Sumerian literary tablets surviving today at around 40,000, with well over a hundred thousand other tablets being found with administrative writings. Many of these tablets have been lost to private collections or the black market, but enough survive for modern archaeologists and historians to have collected a number of Sumerian stories and epics, the most famous of these being the Epic of Gilgamesh.
