How many German people actually supported Hitler? How did this number change through the war?
It is entirely impossible to get factual ratings on the approval of Hitler during the Nazi regime as the nature of the totalitarian state made it impossible for any individual to speak out against Hitler without being imprisoned, killed, or tortured. Many sources give different representations of the German population’s opinion of Hitler, with some believing the state was held together by fear and others through popular support. In all it is difficult to say how popular Hitler truly was, but it is certain that the majority of the population supported his government in the early years of the war, although this drastically fell as the year progressed.
