How long did the torch last in medieval times? What were they made of?
Torches in Medieval times did not have the appearance that most Hollywood films portray them today. In general, most medieval buildings were lit with either candles or lanterns, and torches were not used often due to the danger of them causing a fire. Some torches were used in shows or as part of ceremonies, and usually took the form of large reinforced candles rather than sticks covered in rags. These candles were usually made of tallow, a form of animal fat, and a wick made of wood and would usually last a few hours, depending on the quality of the materials used.
