How important were the writing of the muckrakers in the Progressive movement ?
The writing of muckrakers, which would be called investigative journalists today, was massively important in the Progressive Era of the United States (c. 1890-1920). Their popular newspapers used their massive audience to highlight the massive amounts of corruption, discrimination, and abuse of power that was present within the United States at the time.
They were important as public and political figures due to their ability to force the politicians and leaders of the time to face the issues that were the most important to the common people. Their stories led to massive improvements in urban living and working conditions along with a steep reduction in corruption within the American government.
Today the term is largely a negative one used to describe journalists who skew or embellish stories in order to promote their own political beliefs or ideologies.
