How did the Vikings sex life look like before and after they got married?
Viking cultures were well known in Medieval times for their freedom around sex and public displays of affection. Within Viking society, most families would have a slave, known as a thrall, and it was common for both the men and women of Viking society to have sex with these individuals even when married.
Marriage was still the most important institution in Viking society, however, as it symbolized not only the joining of two individuals but also of their families.
Before marriage, individuals were free to have sex with any other unmarried individual, but in general once married both parties would be monogamous except for their interactions with slaves and prisoners of war.
Affairs were common, however, and were the source of many violent acts of retribution due to jealousy of the husband or wife.
