The economy absolutely tanked and most Americans, urban and rural alike, basically became poor. There were mass migrations out of rural areas (such as Oklahomans moving to California and blacks moving north) and urban Americans often found themselves reliant on food lines and rations. Unemployment reached all time highs and only started to slightly recover during the New Deal building projects.
