How did people practice sex in the 1800s America when houses were full with children?
The popular image of American citizens in the 19th century is one of good morals, integrity, and modesty. In reality, the large amount of American citizens of the time were relatively poorly educated and completely unconcerned with modesty and politeness. Socially, it was extremely common for a husband and wife to have sex in the same room or even same bed as their children or relatives without any reluctance. It must be remembered that the shame and embarrassment of sexual acts is a relatively new introduction to popular society that has only ever been present in the upper classes of society until the end of the 19th century when it became relatively common practice. Often, couples would have relations anywhere they liked in the house, with relatively no concern over whether the family witnessed it or not.
