For how long was the word “Christians” used for Christians?
As many Christian texts were written in Greek, it seem that Christian was used by these sources until the rise of Roman Christianity in the 4th century with Constantine’s Edict of Milan. From here “Christian” is used more commonly whilst “Christian” gradually fell out of favor. Even so, it is only in the 5th century where the first recorded case of “Christian” is used and “Christian” is still used more widely. Scholars theorize that it is with the rise of the Roman Catholic Church and the emperor as its head that we begin to see the term “Christian” appear more regularly than “Chrestians”.
