Explain, how vacancies are introduced in an ionic solid when a cation of higher valency is added as an impurity in it?

When a higher valency cation is added, some cation vacancies are created. Such as if molten sodium chloride containing a little of SrCl2 is allowed to crystallised, some of the sites of Na+ are occupied by Sr2+ions. For each Sr2+ion introduced, two Na+ions are removed to maintain the electrical neutrality. So, one of the lattice site remains vacant
