Discuss the role of sanitation in urban areas.
Sanitation covers arrangements for removal of human excreta, drainage of rain water and effluents and collection and disposal of garbage. Proper sanitation is an essential condition for improvement in health, productivity and quality of life. Lack of cleanliness results in breaking out of epidemics like plague, kala-azar, cholera, small pox, etc. Lack of proper sanitation results in frequent occurrence of material deaths and diarrhoea diseases. Hence, there is an urgent need to improve sanitation facilities not only in urban areas hut also in rural areas.
