Did samurai have ranks and what were their ranks?

Answer:

This is a difficult question as the term Samurai was not originally used in Japan and instead they were originally referred to as “bushi”, which means “those who serve”. In general there would be ranks of samurai, from those who protected the lesser lords and nobles to those who protected and served the emperor himself. By the 12th century, there was a basic rank structure in Japan, with a Kenin samurai at the top, who were the administrators or vassals of a region, then the high ranking samurai who fought on horseback and finally the foot soldiers, who were usually samurai only in name.
