Did Charles V really say “I speak Spanish to God, French to men, Italian to women, and German to my horse”.?
Charles V most certainly did not say these exact words, but is not entirely clear as to whether he said something similar to this. The first record of this saying comes from an account written 40 years after his death by Girolamo Fabrizi d’Acquapendente. Chances are he may have said something similar to this, which was then attributed to him in order to give the quote more gravitas and authority.
