Did barracks exist in medieval ages?
Basic forms of barracks such as buildings within castles and forts did exist in the Medieval Ages but they were not as widespread as in Roman times. Large permanent barracks became popular again in the rise of the professional armies of the 18th century which needed permanent housing. Barrack originally comes from the Spanish word “Barraca”, which means temporary housing for soldiers on campaign. In this sense of the word, barracks were widespread throughout the Medieval Ages as soldiers needed camps to sleep in while fighting in wars.
