A system of particles has potential energy when these particles are held certain distance apart against some force.
For example, chemical energy is due to chemical bonding between the atoms. Gravitational energy arises when objects are held at some distance against the gravitational attraction. Similarly, nuclear energy arises on account of nuclear forces.
